1. Potato Chip

1853, Saratoga Springs, New York

As a world food, potatoes are second in human consumption only to rice. And as thin, salted, crisp chips, they are America's favorite snack food. Potato chips originated in New England as one man's variation on the French-fried potato, and their production was the result not of a sudden stroke of culinary invention but of a fit of pique.
In the summer of 1853, American Indian George Crum was employed as a chef at an elegant resort in Saratoga Springs, New York. On Moon Lake Lodge's restaurant menu were French-fried potatoes, prepared by Crum in the standard, thick-cut French style that was popularized in France in the 1700s and enjoyed by Thomas Jefferson as ambassador to that country. Ever since Jefferson brought the recipe to America and served French fries to guests at Monticello, the dish was popular and serious dinner fare.
At Moon Lake Lodge, one dinner guest found chef Crum's French fries too thick for his liking and rejected the order. Crum cut and fried a thinner batch, but these, too, met with disapproval. Exasperated, Crum decided to rile the guest by producing French fries too thin and crisp to skewer with a fork.

The plan backfired. The guest was ecstatic over the browned, paper-thin potatoes, and other diners requested Crum's potato chips, which began to appear on the menu as Saratoga Chips, a house specialty. Soon they were packaged and sold, first locally, then throughout the New England area. Crum eventually opened his own restaurant, featuring chips. At that time, potatoes were tediously peeled and sliced by hand. It was the invention of the mechanical potato peeler in the 1920s that paved the way for potato chips to soar from a small specialty item to a top-selling snack food.
For several decades after their creation, potato chips were largely a Northern dinner dish. In the 1920s, Herman Lay, a traveling salesman in the South, helped popularize the food from Atlanta to Tennessee. Lay peddled potato chips to Southern grocers out of the trunk of his car, building a business and a name that would become synonymous with the thin, salty snack. Lay's potato chips became the first successfully marketed national brand, and in 1961 Herman Lay, to increase his line of goods, merged his company with Frito, the Dallas-based producer of such snack foods as Fritos Corn Chips.

Americans today consume more potato chips (and Fritos and French fries) than any other people in the world; a reversal from colonial times, when New Englanders consigned potatoes largely to pigs as fodder and believed that eating the tubers shortened a person's life—not because potatoes were fried in fat and doused with salt, today's heart and hypertension culprits, but because the spud, in its unadulterated form, supposedly contained an aphrodisiac which led to behavior that was thought to be life shortening. Potatoes of course contain no aphrodisiac, though potato chips are frequently consumed with passion and are touted by some to be as satisfying.

Here the recipe of this delicious Chip:

INGREDIENTS
  • 2 medium Yukon Gold or Idaho potatoes, peeled and sliced into 1/8-inch slices on a mandoline or other handheld slicer
  • 3 tablespoons olive, canola, or peanut oil
  • N/A Salt
  • N/A freshly ground pepper

PREPARATION

    1. Preheat the oven to 400°F. Slice the potatoes into a bowl and immediately toss them with the oil. Season lightly with salt and arrange them in a single layer on a baking sheet. Bake in the oven until golden brown — about 12-15 minutes. Season again lightly with salt and pepper when they come out of the oven. Transfer to a rack to cool for maximum crispness.
  1. Weighing your options
    1. If you want to be a little more daring, don't limit yourself to salt and pepper — you can season with ancho chile powder, ground cumin, minced herbs, toasted sesame seeds, ground nori (toasted black seaweed sheets used to roll sushi) — really anything you like. Just be sure to season immediately after the chips come out of the oven, while there is still some residual oil for the spices to adhere to.

  4. A taco is a delicious dish that is found in households and restaurants all across the world. Tacos make an excellent family meal or party food because they are easy to make, inexpensive, and they can be created with a person’s preferences in mind. Being able to choose your own toppings gives tacos a personalized flavor. Lots of people enjoy tacos but the history behind this appetizing treat is interesting as well.

  5. The exact timeline of the creation of tacos is unknown, but it has been estimated that tacos were first made around the 1500s. The earliest tacos were made with thin slices of meat cooked over coals. The meat was then placed in a corn tortilla and topped with salsa, onions, guacamole, and lime. This taco is known as the carne asada taco.

  6. As the taco grew in popularity, different regions throughout Mexico began creating their own personalized versions. For instance there are De Cabeza, or head tacos, which were made with cow heads, or Carnitas, which were made with small pieces of pork.

  7. The taco made its way to the United States and was first documented in the newspaper in 1905. This led to some changes in the original recipes for tacos. In the mid-1900s, hard shells were invented and made it easier than ever to create tacos. As tacos became a hit worldwide, taco stands and Mexican restaurants featuring tacos on the menu began popping up everywhere. Many casual dining and fast food restaurants began carrying tacos, including the franchise Taco Bell.

  8. Tacos have been modified throughout the years to suit everyone’s tastes. Fish tacos, soft flour tortilla tacos, and other variations have made their way to households all across the world. Taco kits are a fast, easy, and convenient way to make terrific tacos at home in a hurry. These kits contain salsa, spices for meats, and taco shells. Adventurous cooks can make fun taco creations by experimenting in the kitchen with many different spices and ingredients.

  9. The simplicity of the tacos makes tacos a food that almost anyone can make without spending a fortune. The ability to add delicious meats like chicken, fish, ground beef, and steak, as well as toppings such as lettuce, tomatoes, salsa, guacamole, and other ingredients offers endless combinations. Fish and Chips    History about Fish and Chips The potato is thought to have been brought to England from the New World in the 17th century by Sir Walter Raleigh although it is believed that the French invented the fried potato chip. Both Lancashire and London stake a claim to being the first to invent this famous meal – chips were a cheap, staple food of the industrial north whilst fried fish was introduced in London’s East End. In 1839 Charles Dickens referred to a “fried fish warehouse” in his novel, ‘Oliver Twist’. The populace soon decided that putting fried fish and chips together was a very tasty combination and so was born our national dish of fish and chips! The first fish and chip shop in the North of England is thought to have opened in Mossely, near Oldham, Lancashire, around 1863. Mr Lees sold fish and chips from a wooden hut in the market and later he transferred the business to a permanent shop across the road which had the following inscription i...
